In a strategic move to solidify their leadership and coaching structure, the Detroit Tigers have signed manager AJ Hinch to a confidential long-term contract extension, as announced by president of baseball operations Scott Harris during the recent winter meetings. This groundbreaking decision is set to reshape the team’s future, emphasizing stability and commitment.

The terms of the agreement, although undisclosed, signal a significant investment in Hinch’s managerial prowess. The deal materialized during a pivotal dinner gathering, attended by Hinch, Harris, and general manager Jeff Greenberg, just a week after the conclusion of the Tigers’ 2023 season on October 2nd.

Reflecting on the unexpected extension, Hinch expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I didn’t really see it coming, but I had tried to make it very clear how much I love working with Scott, getting to know Greenie, and being a Tiger.” He further added, “When he approached me about it, it was an immediate yes. I was interested in whatever they had in mind.”

AJ Hinch, 49, brings a wealth of experience to the Tigers, having managed the team for three years following a successful five-season stint with the Houston Astros. Notably, he led the Astros to a World Series title in 2017, a remarkable achievement that contributed to his reputation in the baseball world. However, Hinch faced adversity, receiving a one-year suspension from Major League Baseball and subsequent termination by Houston in 2020 due to his involvement in the infamous sign-stealing scandal.

With a career managerial record of 791-717, including a 221-265 record during his tenure in Detroit, Hinch has demonstrated his ability to navigate the challenges of the league. The Tigers, despite a 78-84 record in the 2023 season, are hopeful that the extended partnership with Hinch will pave the way for a brighter future.

In addition to securing Hinch, the Tigers have finalized their coaching staff for the upcoming 2024 season, introducing four new additions to the team. This strategic move aims to enhance the overall performance and development of the players under Hinch’s leadership.

Joey Cora, a seasoned coaching veteran, joins the Tigers as their third-base coach. With experience coaching third base for the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cora’s expertise is poised to bring a fresh perspective to the team. His previous roles as a bench coach with Miami and a third-base coach with the Chicago White Sox showcase a diverse skill set that aligns with the Tigers’ vision for success.

Anthony Iapoce assumes the role of first-base coach after managing the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate in Toledo during the previous season. With a background as a senior hitting coordinator for Boston in 2022 and prior positions with the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers, Iapoce’s experience adds a valuable dimension to the coaching staff.

Ryan Sienko, Detroit’s new catching coach, transitions from his role as field coordinator and director of coaching for the past two seasons. His extensive experience with the Dodgers and Baltimore, coupled with his expertise in player development, positions Sienko as a key asset in nurturing the Tigers’ talent.

Lance Zawadzki rounds out the new coaching additions as the assistant major league hitting coach. Zawadzki’s tenure as hitting coordinator in Boston’s player development system has equipped him with the skills needed to contribute to the Tigers’ offensive strategies.

Incorporating these seasoned professionals into the coaching lineup underscores the Tigers’ commitment to creating a well-rounded and competitive team. The synergy between Hinch and his revamped coaching staff sets the stage for an exciting 2024 season, with fans eagerly anticipating a turnaround from the team’s recent struggles.
